Habitat Homeownership
Are you or someone you know struggling to find safe, decent, and affordable housing in Springfield or Greene County, MO?
Habitat for Humanity of Springfield partners with deserving Greene County families and individuals who need quality homes. Partners are selected on the basis of need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner.
How Does Habitat Homeownership Work?
A Habitat Springfield partner buys the house for the cost of materials using a Habitat no-profit, no-interest loan. Each partner individual or one-adult family must contribute a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity to build the new home; a two-adult family must earn a minimum of 350 hours. Sweat equity serves some important purposes: builds pride of ownership, develops knowledge and skills, and instills a sense of community. Habitat Springfield is accustomed to working with partners with disabilities or who juggle school, work, and family, and will help design a sweat equity program appropriate for the individual or family.
To fulfill program requirements, sweat equity is broken down as follows:
- Partner individuals or partner families with one adult must complete 85 pre-build hours working on homes for other families in need or working in the ReStore, followed by at least 100 hours helping to build their own home.
- Partner families with two adults must complete 110 pre-build hours, followed by at least 125 hours working on their own home.
- Friends and relatives of Habitat partners can contribute up to 75 hours toward the total.
- Finally, 40 hours of Homeowner Tools for Life classes provided by Habitat Springfield are required, and count toward the sweat equity obligation.
