Families are selected on the basis of need, ability to
pay, and willingness to partner. A partner family buys the house for the
value of material with a Habitat no profit, no interest loan. Families
contribute 350 hours of “sweat equity” to build their homes. The purpose of
sweat equity is to: a) to build pride of ownership, b) develop knowledge and
skills, and c) build a sense of community. Family members must complete 100
pre-build hours to determine willingness to partner, and then contribute at
least 125 hours building their own homes. Seventy-five hours can be contributed by
friends & family. A total of 50 hours of required homeowner readiness
classes is also counted as sweat equity.
