Habitat for Humanity of Springfield Begins
Center-City Revitalization Efforts
by Building on Reclaimed Lots in
Greene
County
Springfield, Mo—Habitat
for Humanity of Springfield, Missouri will hold a
press conference at 929
East Lynn Street in
Springfield on
Saturday, February 14 at 9:30 a.m. to kick off “Project ReHabitat,” a
program that will help advance center-city revitalization efforts by
building new Habitat houses on reclaimed lots in Greene
County.
During the kickoff Habitat Springfield will present a check for
$29,800 to the City of Springfield
for the 2008 property taxes paid by Habitat for Humanity homeowners living
in Springfield.
The media and general public are invited to the event and encouraged
to inquire about Habitat Springfield’s new rehab program, including the
impact that Project ReHabitat will have on the local economy.
“Project ReHabitat is
an initiative to revitalize neighborhoods in Greene County
by deconstructing unsafe homes and building safe, affordable homes for
Habitat families,” said Kristy Nelson, Habitat Springfield’s development
director.
On Saturday and for
the next several weeks, approximately one hundred students from Missouri
State University’s Habitat for Humanity Chapter, Construction Club, and the
Industrial Management Department will work with Habitat Springfield
construction managers and volunteers on the deconstruction of the
dilapidated house at 929 East Lynn in order to prepare the lot for the
construction of a new Habitat home in March.
Nelson explained,
“This program is made possible through land donations, such as this lot on Lynn Street, donated by Paul and Norma
Hoon, and the tireless efforts of our volunteers and community supporters
like Chase Bank who will fund the new Habitat house that will be built here.
We hope Project ReHabitat sparks a transformation throughout the
whole community.”
MHDC tax credits are
available to qualified property donors in
Greene County, Missouri.
Anyone needing more information about Project ReHabitat can contact
